1. Clean Up your yard or current landscaping – by simply cleaning up your yard or landscape you can improve the look tremendously.  When installing a new landscape this is a must, it’s like starting out with a blank canvass.

4. Draw up a Plan – make a sketch of how you want your landscape to look.  This helps in processing how everything will be laid out.

5. Take Measurements – you can add these to your drawing and are necessary in determining how much stone you will need for bordering or fill, as well as weed matting and placement.

6. Decide what plants, trees, flowers or shrubs you want for the landscape.

7. Dig up the area – this can take a bit of effort and needs to be a little more precise and in many cases you are better off having a professional landscaper do it.

8. Lay down the weed matting – this stops weeds from growing up into your landscaping.

9. Border the edge with stones – this defines the edge of the landscape and looks great.

10. Plant your trees, flowers or shrubs.

11. Add any accents like stones or boulders, gnomes or statues.

12. Fill with mulch or rock.

Planting a flower garden dot have to cost you an arm and a leg.  Nor does it have to take up your entire weekend.  There are some quick and easy things you can do that are free as well.

1. Clean out the gardens

Get those hands dirty.  Clean out your garden beds.  Remove the dead plants and leaves.  All that should be in the garden are your plants.  Turn or fluff your mulch to make it look fresh.

2. Separate the existing plants

Go through the garden and look for the different plants that can be separated.  Separate them and use them in different locations throughout the garden.  This will keep your existing plants from getting too big and it also enables you to expand your garden easily.

3. Do not plant too close

Sometimes when the plants are small, we will plant items too close together, especially in the spring when everything hasn’t yet reached full size.  Resist the temptation.  Keep your plants far apart other wise you will have a crowded mess when they get bigger and wind up moving them all around.

4. Keep the deer out

A great way to keep deer out of your garden is to use hair.  Deer despise the smell of humans, so when I say hair I mean Human hair.  So, the next time you get your hair cut, bring a bag along and ask for the clippings.  Spread the hair along the edge of your garden bed.

5. Get rid of weeds naturally

Use straight vinegar to spray on weeds and even grass in sidewalk cracks or bricks.  Keep the vinegar in a  sprayer and shoot those weeds when you see them.  This will kill the weeds and unwanted grass.

6. Make your own fertilizer

Epsom salt is a great alternative to fertilizer.  It is made of magnesium and sulfate which plants love, especially houseplants, roses, tomatoes and peppers.  And it is great for the environment.  Use 1 tablespoon Epsom Salt with 1 gallon of water in a watering can.  Water your plants with this solution once a month.

7. Edge your garden beds

At the beginning of the spring, when you have cleared out all the dead plants and leaves and turned the soil or mulch, edge the garden beds.  Simply take a lawn edger and go along the full length of the garden where it meets the grass.  It makes for a beautifully defined garden.  Do it about 3 more times during the summer and fall.  You can also use your trimmer to do the edging just turn it on the side.
